Abstract

Interferons (IFNs), discovered by A.Isaacs and D.Lindenmann in the middle of the twentieth century, are low-molecular-weight proteins (glycoproteins), cytokines and are synthesized by almost all cells of our body in the process of a protective reaction in response to the invasion of foreign agents – viruses, bacteria. IFNs are very rapidly synthesized and active molecules, the activity and secretion of which are regulated by immune mechanisms, a number of peptide hormones, glucocorticosteroids, prostaglandins. More than 300 different effects in the body have been documented for interferons, the main of which are antiviral action, modulation of the immune response, regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation, as well as, together with other immune mediators, ensuring the stability of the internal environment, which is implemented indirectly through target cells using secondary messengers that activate transcription of IFN-induced genes and IFN expression.- stimulated factors.
